# AI Visibility

> See how much, where, and how your brand is mentioned in AI answers versus competitors

AI Visibility is the first screen for AI search performance. It shows, in one view, how often your brand shows up in AI answers, where it lands in the answer, and which topics competitors are beating you on.

## Layout

| Area                  | Content                                           |
| --------------------- | ------------------------------------------------- |
| Top filters | Period, region, prompt panel version, product |
| Overall mentions | Mention rate or mention-rank trend for the period |
| Scoreboard | Metric comparison by brand and by engine |
| Mention rate by topic | Your brand vs. competitors, topic by topic |
| Citations | Domains and pages AI engines cite |
| Insights | A summary of what changed this period |

## Filters

| Filter               | Use                                                                            |
| -------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Date range           | 7, 30, 60, or 90 days                                                          |
| Region | Measured by country. Defaults to global; can be saved as the workspace default |
| Prompt panel version | View data against a specific panel version |
| Product | Split visibility by product. Only shown in workspaces with a product catalog |

<Tip>
  Use 7 days for recent movement, 30 days for a default weekly review, and 60-90 days for campaign or seasonal trends.
</Tip>

<Note>
  Changing the prompt panel version changes the comparison baseline too. Don't read a single trend line across a panel overhaul. See panel versioning in [Prompt](/dashboard/prompts) for details.
</Note>

## The four core metrics

Every card on this page shares the same four metrics.

| Metric               | Definition                                                                           | Good direction      |
| -------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | ------------------- |
| Mention rate | Share of AI responses that mentioned the brand | Higher is better |
| Mention rank | Average position where the brand is mentioned in the answer. 1 is first, 2 is second | **Lower is better** |
| Share of Voice (SoV) | Your share of mentions relative to competitors in AI answers | Higher is better |
| #1 share | Share of responses where the brand was mentioned first | Higher is better |

<Warning>
  Mention rank is the one metric that runs the opposite direction. A rank moving from 3 to 2 is an improvement.
</Warning>

Mention rate and SoV answer different questions. Mention rate is "did we show up," and SoV is "how much of the answer was about us once we showed up." A high mention rate with a low SoV means you're mostly getting a passing mention.

## Overall mentions

A card showing the trend across the whole period.

* Pick **Mention rate** or **Mention rank** at the top of the card.
* Toggle engines on or off, or view them all together.
* Turn on **Fixed scale** to keep the y-axis range constant across filter changes, so you can compare the size of a swing accurately.

</Frame>

| Pattern | Interpretation | What to check next |
| ---------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Gradual rise | Content and citation base is building | Maintain |
| Flat | Little left to gain within the current prompt scope | Expand topics in [Prompt](/dashboard/prompts) |
| Sudden spike | A new page went live or a citation source changed | Check the citations card for new sources |
| Sudden drop | A citation source dropped off, or a competitor strengthened content | Check the insights panel and [Citation](/dashboard/citation) |
| One day is blank | That day's measurement hasn't completed | Check again a day later |

## Scoreboard

The **Brand** tab compares you against competitors in one table; the **Engine** tab breaks performance down by engine. Every column is mention rate, SoV, mention rank, and #1 share; click a column header to sort.

<Frame>
  <img src="https://mintlify.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/opactor/images/dashboard/visibility-scoreboard.png" alt="Brand and engine scoreboard" />
</Frame>

How to read the Engine tab:

| Situation                                 | Meaning                                           | Response                                                                |
| ----------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| One engine's mention rate is uniquely low | You're missing from that engine's trusted sources | Check that engine's citation sources in [Citation](/dashboard/citation) |
| Every engine is evenly low | Content itself is thin | Generate pages in [On-Site](/dashboard/on-site) |
| Mention rate is high but rank is poor | You're mentioned but treated as an afterthought | Strengthen evidence and specificity vs. competitors |

## Mention rate by topic

Compares your mention rate to competitors' at the topic level. It's the fastest way to see where you're winning and where you're losing.

<Frame>
  <img src="https://mintlify.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/opactor/images/dashboard/visibility-topic.png" alt="Mention rate by topic" />
</Frame>

Switch views with the top tabs.

| Tab     | Shows                                               | When to use                         |
| ------- | --------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------- |
| Focus | Topics you're actively tracking for growth | Weekly check on target topics |
| Winning | Topics where you're mentioned more than competitors | See which formats are working |
| Gaps | Topics where competitors are mentioned more | Pick your next content topic |
| Custom  | A hand-picked topic set                             | Track a specific lineup or campaign |

**The Gaps tab is where content planning starts.** Building [On-Site](/dashboard/on-site) pages for the topics with the biggest gap is the highest-leverage move.

<Note>
  Panels created before version tracking was introduced don't have per-topic analysis. A notice appears on the card in that case.
</Note>

## Citations

Shows the domains and pages AI answers actually cited.

| Category | Meaning                                  | Next action                                             |
| -------- | ---------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------- |
| Owned | Your domain was cited | Keep it current, reuse the winning format elsewhere |
| Earned   | A third-party site was cited             | Track it as a target in [Off-Site](/dashboard/off-site) |
| New | A source that first appeared this period | Often behind a spike or a drop |

Switch between **Domains** and **Pages** tabs. A low owned share means AI is describing you using someone else's site as evidence, not yours.

Go to [Citation](/dashboard/citation) for a deeper look.

## Insights

| Insight type | What to check |
| ------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------ |
| Mention rate rising or falling | Which prompts gained or lost mentions |
| Strongest on a specific engine | What sources that engine cites |
| Falling on a specific engine | Whether citation sources changed |
| Low coverage on an engine | What sources that engine trusts instead |
| Mention position shifted | Where in the answer you now appear |
| A competitor is ahead | Compare answers where both brands were mentioned |

<Note>
  Insights don't show until enough analysis data has accumulated.

    Read the mention rate trend on the overall mentions card, then check rank and SoV on the scoreboard.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Find the weak engine">
    Use the Engine tab to find the engine with the lowest mention rate.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pull 2-3 gap topics">
    Pick the topics with the biggest gap from the Gaps tab under mention rate by topic.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Find the cause">
    Follow the insights links, or check that engine's source mix in [Citation](/dashboard/citation).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Act">
    Route topic gaps to [On-Site](/dashboard/on-site), source gaps to [Off-Site](/dashboard/off-site), and existing-page problems to [Site Audit](/dashboard/site-audit).

## Troubleshooting

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="There are no numbers at all">
    Measurement needs a prompt panel and at least one completed analysis run. If you just onboarded, wait for the first run to finish. If it's still empty after widening to 90 days, first confirm you have a panel in [Prompt](/dashboard/prompts).
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="The end of the trend line is blank">
    Today's measurement hasn't completed yet. The last day fills in once aggregation finishes.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Numbers that were there yesterday suddenly changed">
    Check whether the prompt panel version filter changed. A different version measures a different set of prompts, so the values won't be continuous.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="The mention rate by topic card is empty">
    The selected panel version predates version tracking and has no topic data. Select a more recent version to see it.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Is a rising mention rank bad?">
    Yes, a bigger number is worse here. Mention rank is a position within the answer, so lower is better.
  </Accordion>
